We are not meant to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

There is a saying that no matter what darkness you’re going through in life, there will be a light at the end of it. I believe this to be true but I don’t think we are really supposed to see it until we get there. My mom read a daily reflection to me recently that spoke about this very thing and it brought up two important words: light and fear. Fear tries to hold us back everyday from doing something new, from loving someone, from being ourselves, from speaking up. To help combat this fear we need light and hope to push us forward through the darkness, but how much light? You just need enough to get you through that moment, that day. If you focus on just trying to make it through one day then you’ll find the light you need to see where you are and one more step ahead. That’s all we should worry about, but instead we fill our minds with what will happen in the next week, the next year, even the next five years. You see though there is no way to “see” that far ahead because yes, we can see where we are standing and that there is a glorious light at the end if we have hope, but you can’t see anything in between those two. The only light in between is the light we are carrying forward and the next light God will send us. I know that darkness can be frightening, unpredictable, and unknown, but something good and beautiful always seems to come out of it even if we don’t see the results until much later. God likes to move in mysterious ways and maybe He likes to cover us with darkness to prevent us from seeing ahead because it’s simply supposed to be a mystery or a mercy to protect us.
