5 Spiritual Reads for the School Year

Hello sisters!!

Happy September!!

I know it's not fall yet but temperatures are starting to cool down, just a smidge. (Thank you God!)  I'm itching for Fall, my favorite season ever.  But since it is September, that means back to school.  If you're in high school, or even junior high, you probably realize that you don't have a lot of time for fun reading.  Oftentimes, spiritual reading can also be placed on the back burner.  If you're in Catholic school or homeschooled, you probably have a religion course of some kind, but this is not always enough to keep our little souls afloat on the choppy waters of the crazy school year.

I would like to share with you 5 easy spiritual reads that you can pick up anytime, even when your school schedule is pretty packed!  Even though they're easy, they're not dry or simple.  They are deep, beautiful, and spiritually refreshing!
  • Mary Was Her Life: The Story of Maria Teresa Quevedo - I can never recommend this book enough.  It reads almost like a novel; full of charm, growth, and beauty.  Bl. Maria Teresa is a wonderful inspiration for girls as she was very active in her high school, sports, and Marian league.
  • The Imitation of Christ - This book has short chapters so you can read one a day or when you have a few moments. The language is simple yet deep too.   It's easy to understand but you can read it over and over again gleaning new treasures.
  • 7 Secrets of the Eucharist (and 7 Secrets of Confession) - This is my sister's recommendation.  She has taken it to adoration and found it very helpful.
  • Revelations of St. Bridget: On the Life and Passion of Our Lord and the Life of His Blessed Mother - Yes, it is a long title, but it's a very short book.  Just $4.95 on Amazon.  You get to read Jesus' very own words to St. Bridget and they are very moving.  This book illustrates Our Lord's Passion with reverence, honesty, brutality, and even beauty.
  • The Way of Perfection by St. Teresa of Avila - I'm not linking to a specific edition because there are so many and I can't find the edition I have online.  This book too is short and has short chapters so it's easy to read.  St. Teresa is speaking to her sisters, but everyone can learn something from her advice on prayer, contemplation, and meditation.  She makes contemplation seem simple because she teaches you the very basics of it.  St. Teresa gives you a firm foundation and invites you to just sit with Our Lord and talk with Him as if He were your best-est friend.
Bonus!  For those of you who think you might possibly have a religious vocation, Tuning In to God's Call is a wonderful, short book with daily passages, prayers, and reflections.  You can easily read a couple pages a day and then put the direction into action!  I highly recommend it!

What are some of your favorite easy spiritual reads?  What will you be reading this school year?

May God bless you and keep you,

Sarah
